Selections The Place

Baskerville, Upper Swan, Western Australia.

Baskerville is a semi-rural district on the eastern side of the Upper Swan Valley, about 22 kilometres eastwards of the Western Australian capital of Perth. There is no village or town of the name, which applies to locality in the centre of the Swan Valley vineyards and wineries region.

The green speckled areas are vineyards.

Mrs Ellen Viveash, who in 1834 was living at 'Baskerville', Tasmania (then called Van Dieman's Land) wrote to one of her relatives at 'Baskerville' on the upper Swan River, about a relative in common, Henry Baskerville Viveash.

'Baskerville' was a land grant assigned to the William and Hester Tanner in 1829. The nature of the relationships between the Viveashs in Tasmania and the Tanners in Western Australia is not clear as yet (although some understanding can be gleaned from this site), but there is possibly a common descent from a Baskerville ancestor as both families chose this name for their respective colonial estates.

Any further information on this place, especially its history, and including links, maps and pictures, would be much appreciated.
